Zavora Marine Laboratory is the most remote, intimate and adventurous of the Oceans Research marine laboratory network.
Zavora (pronounced Zàvora) is located in southernl Mozambique, within the Zavora Lodge (www.zavoralodge.com) approximately 1.5 hour south of Inhambane town and 9 hours north of the South Africa-Mozambique border. It operates in partnership with Mozdivers (www.mozdivers.com).
Zavora Bay is home to some of Eastern Africa's most pristine and diverse reefs. Attracted to this warm wildness are immense populations of Manta rays and shark species.
The laboratory's research is currently focussed on diver impact on Manta Ray cleaning stations, on pristine reefs and in particular, establishing methods of best practise to ensure that diving tourism is not detrimental to the marine life. The laboratory's director is resident scientist, Brazilian, Yara Tibirica.
Zavora Marine Lab will only conduct research with required permit approval from relevant Mozambican authorities.
